A block is a punch is a block

In doing Jitte last night, when we got to the ‘blocks’ moving forward, Sensei Lee stopped us to reiterate that a “block is an attack is a block” and a “punch is an block is a punch.” His thought on this is simple but tremendously valuable: in a reality, we don’t ever go on the offensive. Our energy is going forward and it is part of the mindset of winning in the ring or destroying an attacker. He used the ‘blocks’ we do in Jitte as we step forward as an example. His thought was that we are jamming up an attack, forearm striking to the throat or breaking an arm after we had grabbed it with the draw arm.
Either way, we weren’t in the mindset of ‘defend and attack,’ it was more about finishing an opponent.
